In preparation for our first mitten drop in Antigua, Guatemala, the SmittenWithMittens development team is pinpointing a variety of NGO’s, elementary schools and orphanages that are in need of mittens and other clothing items during the cold winter months.
As part of our overall mission, SmittenWithMittens would like to draw attention and create awareness to the change-makers and social entrepreneurs that are helping to alleviate poverty, provide opportunities and a more comfortable lifestyle for orphans, young kids and teens in developing countries.
We’re solidifying partnerships with organizations focusing on improving healthcare systems and resources for families in developing countries, educational opportunities, economical and sustainable business opportunities and access to day-to-day resources such as clothing, shoes, shelter, school supplies and more.
One organization that we wanted to highlight today is called, “Niños de Guatemala.” Established in 2006, Niños de Guatemala’s (NDG) mission is to contribute to a better future for the people of Guatemala. NDG aims to realize its mission by initiating and supporting small-scale development projects where they are most needed. Local involvement and community development are central to NDG’s projects.
The organization is run by three golden principles – Self-sufficiency: NDG’s main mission for its projects, is for them to strive towards self-sufficiency and independence in the long term. Local community: NDG is a Guatemalan NGO, supported by its Dutch counterpart NDG NL. The organization is directed and run by Guatemalans, with the help of representatives of NDG NL. Better future through education: Education is more than teaching people to read and write. NDG feels that social and personal development are as much a part of education as the subjects in the national curriculum. Personal hygiene, nutrition, and social skills are, among other things, part of what NDG offers the children and their families.
